Jocelyn Barite’s Journey: From Overseas Work to Thriving Hydroponic Farming

In the midst of pandemic-induced lockdowns that left many confined to their homes, Jocelyn Barite, a former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) in Hong Kong for over 14 years, faced a pivotal moment when medical reasons led her back to the Philippines. However, slow internet speeds in her hometown made working online challenging. Determined to forge a new path, she ventured into hydroponic gardening, a method she believed could thrive in Mindanao, inspired by its success in Luzon.

One Heart Farm

Jocelyn’s journey began with thorough research on hydroponic gardening through online platforms like YouTube, Facebook groups, and Google searches. Seeking financial aid, she approached OWWA and secured funding through the Balik Pinas Balik Hanap Buhay program, kickstarting her venture.

On May 3, 2021, Jocelyn launched her hydroponic lettuce project with a hundred seedlings. Despite initial setbacks where only 30 seeds germinated into healthy lettuce, her persistence paid off. Through relentless efforts in experimenting with natural insecticides and refining farming techniques, she achieved success. Every seed planted flourished, requiring minimal resources like recycled Styrofoam, soil, water, and sunlight, without electricity.

Transitioning from personal sales on Facebook, Jocelyn expanded her business by attending seminars on business management and joined the KMME program, honing her entrepreneurial skills. Her product line grew to include freshly produced lettuce, two-flavored salad rolls, and homemade sauce, gaining popularity among friends, online customers, and local eateries.

Jocelyn’s inspiring journey from an OFW to a successful hydroponic farmer underscores resilience, determination, and the transformative power of seeking knowledge and support to turn challenges into opportunities. Her story showcases innovative farming practices not only as a means of sustenance but also as a thriving business model with immense potential in local communities.

Recognized as one of the 2023 Most Inspiring MSMEs in the Micro Enterprise category at the National MSME Summit in Manila, Jocelyn Barite’s success stands as a testament to dedication and adaptability in the face of adversity.

Ms. Barite’s evolution from an OFW to an agricultural entrepreneur is a story of remarkable resilience and resourcefulness, illustrating the transformative power of determination and perseverance. Through her dedication to learning and adapting, she has not only found success but has also become an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.
