In a sport historically dominated by powerhouses like the United States and Europe, a young Filipina is making waves on the international stage. Alexandra “Alex” Eala, the 19-year-old tennis prodigy from Quezon City, has once again defied expectations, etching her name deeper into the annals of Philippine sports history.
A Breakthrough Moment at the Miami Open
March 2025 marked a turning point in Alex Eala’s career. At the prestigious Miami Open, she stunned the tennis world by defeating 25th seed Jelena Ostapenko, followed by a historic victory against Australian Open champion and world No. 5 Madison Keys. Her incredible run saw her advance to the quarterfinals, an achievement that no other Filipino has ever accomplished in a WTA 1000 event.
“I’ve always dreamed of moments like these, competing against the best in the world and proving that Filipino players belong on this stage,” Eala said after her win against Keys. “This is not just about me. It’s about showing that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible.”

The Foundation of a Champion
Alex Eala’s rise to prominence wasn’t built overnight. She comes from a family of athletes—her mother, Rizza Maniego-Eala, was a medalist in swimming at the Southeast Asian Games, while her brother, Michael, played collegiate tennis in the United States.
At the age of 12, Alex moved to Spain to train at the prestigious Rafa Nadal Academy, where she developed her craft under the guidance of world-class coaches and the mentorship of the legendary Rafael Nadal. Her time at the academy proved instrumental, shaping her into a disciplined and fearless competitor.

“Training at the Rafa Nadal Academy has been life-changing. It taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of believing in the process,” she shared. “If you put in the work every day, results will follow.”
Her junior career was nothing short of spectacular. She won the 2020 Australian Open girls’ doubles title, followed by a 2021 Roland Garros doubles victory. However, it was in 2022 that she made history by clinching the US Open girls’ singles title, becoming the first Filipino to win a junior Grand Slam singles event.
Carrying the Flag for Philippine Tennis
Despite her rising global stature, Alex Eala remains deeply committed to her roots. She envisions a stronger, more competitive tennis culture in the Philippines, one where young athletes have better access to training, facilities, and international exposure.
“My dream is to see more Filipinos on the global tennis stage,” Eala stated. “I want to help build a system where young players don’t have to go abroad to reach their full potential. We have the talent; we just need the right support and opportunities.”
Eala’s impact is already evident. More young Filipino athletes are taking up tennis, inspired by her achievements and unwavering determination. Local tennis organizations are also increasing their efforts to nurture the next generation, recognizing that Alex Eala’s success could be a turning point for the sport in the country.

Looking Ahead for Alex Eala
As she continues her ascent in the WTA rankings, Alex Eala is focused on further improving her game, aiming for deeper runs in Grand Slam tournaments and, ultimately, a spot in the world’s top 50. But beyond personal milestones, she remains motivated by a greater mission—to pave the way for future Filipino tennis stars.
“I don’t just play for myself; I play for every young Filipino who dreams of making it big in this sport,” Eala said. “Tennis is a long and difficult journey, but if you have the right mindset, nothing is impossible.”
With her relentless work ethic, humility, and passion for representing the Philippines, Alex Eala is not just a rising tennis star—she is a beacon of hope for an entire generation of aspiring Filipino athletes, and this is only the beginning.
